Water Issue
水資源の問題は世界的な問題です。世界水会議が我が国で開かれたことをきっかけに考えてみました。In Japan it has been said for a long time that safety and water are free of charge. We have an expression “to use just like hot water and water.” But can we still say so ? We can see many people carrying bottled water with them in town.
We buy bottled water even if we can get water from the water pipe.
The World Water Council was set up in 1996. And a forum has been held every three years since 1997. The third forum was held in Kyoto, Osaka and Shiga in March, 2003.

Who is right ?
いったい何が正しいのか基準があいまいな時代です。身近なことを振り返ってみましょう。 It happened on a bus on my way home. I was waiting in line for the bus. A middle-aged woman cut in the line behind me. We got on the bus. The bus was not so crowded but there were no vacant seats except priority seats. She looked around for a vacant seat and found a seat with paper bags on it. To my surprise she picked up the bags, put them on the floor, and sat down on the seat. In a minute a girl who was buying a ticket from the bus driver came back to the seat, and took the bags. She looked surprised, but she said nothing. Then she sat in a priority seat. What do you think of these people ?

Work Experience
消防署での中学生の体験学習の話です。
Last fall I did some work experience at a fire station for three days with about twenty of my friends. I went there by bus because it was far from my house. My cousin is a fire fighter, so I chose a fire station for my work experience.
The rescue training in the smoke was impressive.

Kyu Sakamoto
「坂本九さん」についての英語エッセイの音声です。When Hideo Nomo pitches in the game at his home stadium,
a certain song is played. It is called "Sukiyaki". Its original name was "Ueo Muite Arukou". This song was sung by a Japanese singer, Kyu Sakamoto in 1961. A few years later, it became very popular all over the world. Kyu was given the Golden Record for the song in May, 1964.
Kyu Sakamoto's real name was Hisashi Ohshima. The Chinese character for his first name was written
"九" and he was also the ninth child in his family, so he was called "Kyu", but he did not like it when he was a boy. Some friends called him "Ichiji-ku" because his first name was written by one Chinese character, "九".
